Good start, keep working on it

Hi there;

After testing your product yesterday I am impressed with your progress to date. Unfortunately the product did not do what I wanted it to do, or not as easily as I was hoping for so I have now stopped testing it. I look forward to future versions as it looks like the software has plenty of potential.

Have a great day!

Excellent Software Functionality

I have reviewed many directory programs and which most all of them went so far as options.

Directory Report in my opinion covers any thing imaginable to man kind. I like to purchase software with the most informative information. I will say the program performs well.

Good enough but needs a better user interface

In my opinion this useful software needs a more sophisticated user interface to gain satisfaction and usability level improvements.
First of all the interface should reflect changes user does directly on the file system such as when deleting a folder through Windows Explorer.
In second instance I would suggest some tree organization when showing data. Let's imagine when and why a user should use a software like this... I think is the case when you have a huge amount of files and folders to consolidate, perhaps some very old and going by memory doesn't help. In these cases you need to be concentrated for long times on what you are doing and not on how you are doing it! Often you need to get the newest folder despite files in it are not all the newest ones (developers know the problem). My opinion is that having a tree that lets also compare file by file folder contents just selecting adiacent nodes would help, you should be able to group nodes by name, date and so on and to compare higher or lower nesting levels of similar paths (folders).
The software is useful anyway and pretty quick, I would suggest it for the scope to which is meant. With some improvements would be great. I hope this would help.

Directory Report looks just like the Microsoft Explorer. There is a tree control on the left side and a list of files on the right.

Directory Report shows data that takes a long time to compute (CRC and Directory Totals). That is why it does not refresh when you add/delete a file with the Windows Explorer

The default sorting is by size decreasing. You can change the sorting order by clicking on the column headers or by selecting the menu "sort".

You can show all directories by selecting: Largest / Display Largest Directories
Then change the sorting order by selecting the Created/Access/Modified columns

In all windows, select two files, right click and select: Diff

In all windows, select two directories, right click and select: Compare
Directories are selected in the right side list control
You cannot select directories for compare in the left side tree control

Simply OK

I used it to measure the amount of space used by each user on the server.

Directory Report Review

I wanted to print the directory structure of one of our internal installation CD-ROMs in a tree format. The only option I found so far didn't allow me to out put it in the format I'm uses to. I ususally create the txt file from a tree comand in DOS but couldn't out put hidden folders. I thought I would try your application because it also advertised functionality to use check sums for comparison of data. That would be helpful if I can figure out how to do it. I'm new at Directory printing so I'm struggling with how to use the applicaition and I don't have time to play around with it due to deadlines I have to meet.

Author's Response:
Before printing you should select which attributes you want/not-want printed.
Select menu: Print / Set Printing Options...

To find duplicate files:
Select menu: Duplicates / Find Duplicate Files
Duplicates can be found by same size, and/or name, and/or CRC
CRC is the most accurate but is the slowest

CRC: Each byte of the file is passed through the CRC formula
It generates a 32bit CRC value
Any same sized file with the same CRC is identical

CRC is used by many popular tools to check for identical files
WinZip and WinRAR use it
